Taita Taveta County lays approximately 200kms North West of Mombasa and 360kms south east of Nairobi. The area enjoys tropical climate with an average temperature of 23 degrees Celsius. It is a popular African wildlife sanctuary and also evokes memories of the World War 1. This county has rich history and has been a place of many firsts notably:

• First inland church built at Mahoo by Church Missionary Society
• Kenya’s first newspaper Taveta Chronicles started on the Easter of 1895.
• The first airstrip at Maktau
• It is here that the first shot WW1 East African Campaign was fired

Over a hundred years ago Taita Taveta County was a site of several important battles in the East African campaign of WW1. After war was declared in August 1914 the stage was set for what would become one of the bloodiest battlefields of the First World War pitting Kenya which was then a British colony against Tanzania which was German colony. The remains of many Forts, trenches, stone revetments, loop holes, and endless detritus are waiting to tell you their tale of struggle, hunger and disease during the little known East African Campaign of the First World War.
